THE DAY WHEN MY DOG GAVE BIRTH TO ELEVEN PUPPIES...

I' ll never forget the day my dog gave birth to eleven little puppies - Irish setters. The winter was long time over and in the month of May, precisely May 25, 1992 we were all out in our small week-end house in the mountains. I spent whole night sitting by our faithful, watchful, brilliantly red-haired bitch and offered her my support in that difficult moment. When the dawn finally came there they were all eleven of them, lying in one bundle and hardly moving. They hardly moved but kept close to their mother that licked them and warmed them with her body. We watched them grow and helped these little puppies to become real Irish setters like their mother: fast, alert and amiable. Then we had to give a name to every little being starting with letter A as their mother was a Champion, her offspring seven males and four females had to have a name beginning with letter A. Annabel, Astrid, Archie, Asterix, Allouette, Astra, Astor, Adrian ...surely not an easy task to name them all. They all had deep-blue eyes first and after a month or two they changed in light green-brownish colour. It was a great fun watching them grow. We had a huge pan that we first clang to call them for lunch in the courtyard. They would all come running and squeaking, eager to eat something. They were certainly great eaters. But they soon had to leave us, as the life then was difficult for us. The most important of all in this little story is that the attitude of our great Champion, our big Irish setter changed very much. She offered me her protection and deep love and always walked with close to my feet, attentive and incredibly kind and loving.
